Acne Scar Treatment in Houston

Pitted Scars, Not Active Breakouts

Acne scars are the marks that stay after the breakouts stop: pits, rolling shadows, and texture you can feel. Flat red or brown stains are a different problem, and so is acne that is still active. Treating a pit with a pigment cream, or needling a face that is still breaking out, spends the series in the wrong order.

The short version

01

A pit you can feel is a collagen scar. A flat dark or red mark is pigment or inflammation, not a scar.

02

Breakouts have to be quiet before scar treatment. New acne keeps making new scars.

03

Microneedling is the usual start for shallow rolling scars. Morpheus8® and resurfacing go deeper.

04

Chemical peels help marks and roughness. They do not fill an ice-pick pit.

What's actually happening

Why acne scars behaves this way.

Scar type decides the tool. Rolling scars are broad, shallow waves and often respond to a collagen series. Boxcar scars have sharper edges and may need more depth. Ice-pick scars are narrow and deep, and they are the ones a light peel will never touch. Flat marks left after a pimple are post-inflammatory color. They fade with pigment care and sun protection, and they do not need a scar device. Most faces have a mix, which is why a single device package is a blunt plan.

Collagen lost to old inflammation

A deep breakout damages the scaffold under the skin. When it heals low, you get a depression instead of a stain.

Picking and late treatment

Inflammation that runs longer, or skin that is squeezed, raises the odds of a pit. The scar plan cannot undo that history. It can remodel what is left.

Ongoing breakouts

Every new cyst is a chance at a new scar. Scar devices on active acne spread irritation and waste the series.

Color mistaken for texture

Brown marks on deeper skin tones, and red marks on lighter ones, look like scars in the mirror and behave like pigment once you touch them.

Why the usual fixes fail

The wasted-money detour is real.

The two detours are treating color as if it were a hole, and treating a hole while new breakouts are still digging. Both feel productive. Neither matches the finding.

A scar cream for a pit

Topicals can fade a flat mark. They do not rebuild collagen under a depression. Months of the right cream on the wrong problem is still the wrong problem.

Microneedling through active acne

Needling inflamed skin can flare breakouts and, in some cases, make marks worse. The acne plan comes first.

One aggressive laser as a reset

Deep resurfacing has a recovery and a pigment risk, especially in Houston sun. It is a tool for etched scars after the type is known, not a first package for every pit.

How we treat it

The Scar Plan

Confirm the scar type, confirm the acne is quiet, then pick a depth. Shallow rolling change starts with microneedling. Deeper texture and laxity move to Morpheus8®. Etched, sun-worn scarring can move to resurfacing. Flat marks stay with peels and the pigment plan. Active acne goes back to the adult acne page before any of this starts.

01

Separate pits from marks

If you can feel a depression, it is on this page. If it is flat and red or brown, start with dark spots or texture care. Many people have both, and the color often improves faster than the pit.

02

Quiet the acne first

Ongoing breakouts belong on the adult acne plan, including AviClear when the oil glands are the engine. Scar work waits until new lesions have slowed.

03

Match the depth

Microneedling for shallow rolling scars. Morpheus8® when the scar is deeper or the area is also lax. UltraClear when the texture is etched and a resurfacing recovery is acceptable.

04

Use peels for the surface only

Chemical peels help congestion, tone, and flat marks around the scars. They are not the treatment for a pit, and they should not be sold as one.

Collagen remodeling is slow. A microneedling or Morpheus8® series is judged over about 8 to 12 weeks after each round, not the week of redness. Scars soften. They rarely vanish. Ice-pick scars in particular have a ceiling, and that ceiling is part of the consult before a package is sold.

"I had been treating the dark marks. The pits needed a different plan, and they needed the breakouts to stop first."

Go deeper

What Houston patients comparing acne scars options should know.

Rolling, boxcar, and ice-pick scars

Rolling scars are the easiest of the three to improve with a collagen series, because the depression is broad and shallow. Boxcar scars have a steeper wall and often need more depth, which is where Morpheus8® enters. Ice-pick scars are narrow columns. Needling can soften the area around them and still leave the pit. Anyone promising to erase ice-pick scars with a facial is selling a different concern than the one on your face.

The texture page is for pores and rough skin that was never a scar. If makeup is catching on large pores and the skin was not scarred by acne, start there.

Microneedling, Morpheus8®, or resurfacing

Microneedling is mechanical collagen stimulation with a few days of pinkness. It is the usual start for shallow scars once acne is quiet. Morpheus8® adds radiofrequency at depth, which helps when the scar is deeper or the cheek has also loosened. UltraClear is resurfacing, with a real recovery, for etched texture that needles alone will not plane down.

The order is the point. Resurfacing a face that is still breaking out, or that has not had a simpler series, skips the steps that would have shown how much of the scar was shallow.

Marks are not scars

Post-acne marks are color left in flat skin. They respond to pigment-safe topicals, peels, SPF, and time, faster once nothing new is inflaming the skin. On deeper skin tones, aggressive lasers and deep peels can create new marks. That risk is why scar depth and pigment risk are separate questions at the consult, even when they sit on the same cheek.

Houston sun and scar recovery

Microneedling, RF, and resurfacing all leave skin more sensitive to UV. A series is easier to heal from October through April than in the middle of a Houston summer. SPF is part of the scar plan, because a new dark mark next to an improving pit is a poor trade. If the timing is summer, the plan may start with acne control and pigment care and schedule the collagen work for lower-UV months.

What it costs

A plan before a price tag.

Acne scar pricing follows the depth: a microneedling series, Morpheus8®, or resurfacing are different visits, and most real scars need more than one session. The consultation is complimentary when booked through our Houston clinic booking flow. You leave with a written plan either way.

Why ZO Houston

Plan first. Treatment second.

A ZO Skin Centre is different because the visit starts with a plan, not a menu. Your provider reviews skin behavior, tolerance, products, timing, and goals before recommending treatment. We use physician-grade ZO protocols, document the plan clearly, and tell you no when a service is not the best fit.

What treats pitted acne scars?

Shallow rolling pits usually start with microneedling once breakouts are quiet. Deeper boxcar texture often moves to Morpheus8®. Etched scars may need resurfacing. Ice-pick scars improve less than rolling scars, and the consult should say so before treatment.

Are acne marks the same as acne scars?

No. Flat red or brown marks are color. Pits and rolling shadows are collagen loss. Creams and peels can fade color. They do not fill a depression. A lot of faces have both, and the color is treated on a different timeline.

Can I treat scars while I still have acne?

Scar devices wait until breakouts have slowed. Needling or resurfacing through active acne irritates the skin and new lesions create new scars. Start with the adult acne plan if you are still breaking out.

Will a chemical peel remove acne scars?

Peels help tone, congestion, and flat marks. They are a weak tool for a pit you can feel. If a peel is offered as the only treatment for ice-pick or deep boxcar scars, ask what it is supposed to change.

How many sessions do acne scars take?

Most collagen plans are a series, with the change judged 8 to 12 weeks after a round as collagen remodels. One session can make skin look refreshed. It is not a scar result. Deep scars have a ceiling no series fully removes.

Does AviClear help acne scars?

AviClear treats active acne by targeting oil glands. It is not a scar remodeler. If acne is still the engine, AviClear may be part of getting the skin quiet enough for a scar plan later.

Ready for your complimentary consultation?

If you can feel the scar, bring that to the consult. Color and pits are not the same plan.
