Double Chin Treatment in Houston

KYBELLA®, Tightening, or Surgery?

A double chin can be fat, skin, anatomy, or all three, which is why the best treatment is not chosen from a before-and-after gallery. Two people with identical-looking profiles can need completely different plans. The work starts by identifying what is actually creating the fullness under your chin.

The short version

01

A double chin can be fat, skin, structure, or all three. The treatment follows the diagnosis, not the gallery photo.

02

KYBELLA® removes fat. Morpheus8® tightens skin. Chin filler fixes structure. They are not interchangeable.

03

Most real cases are combinations — modest fat plus mild laxity — sequenced fat-first.

04

Significant laxity or a dramatic-change expectation is a surgical conversation, and we will say so plainly.

What's actually happening

Why double chin behaves this way.

Submental fullness has more possible causes than any other single-area concern we treat, and the popular treatments solve entirely different problems: KYBELLA® destroys fat cells, Morpheus8® tightens skin, chin and jawline filler rebalances structure, and surgery repositions and removes. Pick the tool before the diagnosis and you can spend a full budget on the wrong problem.

Submental fat

The classic driver: a localized fat pad under the chin, often genetic and stubbornly diet-resistant.

Skin laxity

Mild loose skin creates a soft, draping fullness that reads as a double chin even with little fat present.

Chin projection and jawline structure

A recessed chin shortens the visual distance between jaw and neck, manufacturing a double chin that is really a profile-balance issue.

Posture, weight, and age

Each layers on top of the anatomy, which is why the same profile can have three different explanations in three different patients.

Why the usual fixes fail

The wasted-money detour is real.

The common detour is treating every under-chin concern as fat, and the quieter one is ignoring the chin itself. This is why we photograph and assess the whole profile before recommending anything.

KYBELLA® into loose skin

Injected into fullness that is mostly laxity, fat reduction can make the area look worse: less fat under already-lax skin means more visible draping.

Tightening a fat problem

Morpheus8® supports mild tightening, but it will not remove a true fat pad. Patients who needed fat reduction leave a tightening series wondering why the profile barely changed.

Ignoring the chin

A meaningful share of double chin patients actually have a recessed chin, and structural balancing changes their profile more than any fat or skin treatment could.

How we treat it

The Under-Chin Assessment

The assessment sorts your fullness into its components — pinch assessment for true fat, laxity evaluation for skin quality, profile analysis for structure — and the plan routes cleanly from there. For a deeper comparison, read our guide to KYBELLA® vs. Morpheus8® vs. surgery.

01

Fat-dominant: KYBELLA®

Typically two to four sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart, with permanent destruction of the treated fat cells. Learn about KYBELLA®.

02

Laxity-dominant: Morpheus8®

A tightening series for skin quality under the chin and along the jawline. Learn about Morpheus8®.

03

Structure-dominant: profile balancing

Chin or jawline filler restores projection and redraws the jaw line — sometimes the only treatment needed.

04

Combination cases: sequence it

Modest fat plus mild laxity is the most frequent real-world finding. Those plans run fat reduction first, then tightening as the area settles.

05

Surgical-level findings: refer honestly

A patient who needed a neck lift will not be made happy by any number of injection sessions. When the assessment points there, we say so.

KYBELLA® results emerge over one to three months per session as the body clears the treated fat, with visible swelling in the first days to weeks. Morpheus8® tightening builds over two to six months. Either way, double chin treatment should be candidacy-led: the goal is a cleaner plan, not selling every patient the same under-chin service.

"Under-chin treatment works best when we diagnose the source of fullness before choosing the tool."

Go deeper

What Houston patients comparing double chin options should know.

KYBELLA® vs. Morpheus8®: fat removal vs. skin tightening

These two get compared constantly, and the comparison is mostly a category error. KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, an injectable that permanently destroys fat cells in the treated area; its job is volume reduction. Morpheus8® is radiofrequency microneedling; its job is skin quality and tightening. A patient with a true fat pad and good skin gets a KYBELLA® conversation. A patient with minimal fat and soft, draping skin gets a Morpheus8® conversation. A patient with both, which is common, may get a sequenced plan. Neither is better; they are answers to different questions.

The chin filler surprise: when the fix is in front of the problem

One of the most counterintuitive findings in an under-chin assessment: sometimes the most effective double chin treatment never touches the area under the chin. A recessed chin or soft jawline shortens the profile and gathers shadow beneath the jaw, and restoring projection with chin and jawline filler can redraw the line of the jaw in a single visit, with no downtime beyond minor swelling. It is not right for everyone, but it is the reason we assess the whole profile rather than staring only at the fullness.

What KYBELLA® recovery actually looks like

KYBELLA® has real, predictable downtime that deserves honest framing: the area swells noticeably for several days and sometimes up to two weeks, with tenderness and temporary numbness. The swelling is actually the treatment working, an inflammatory response as fat cells break down, but it is visible, so sessions get scheduled around events, photos, and video-heavy work weeks. Most patients plan sessions six to eight weeks apart, which conveniently fits the settling timeline. We map this calendar with you before the first injection, not after.

When a surgical consult is the honest recommendation

Significant skin excess, heavy laxity, prominent platysmal bands, or an expectation of a dramatically redefined neck are surgical-territory findings. Liposuction addresses larger fat volumes in one procedure; a neck lift addresses skin and muscle in ways no injectable or device can. When the assessment points there, we say it plainly and help you find the right consultation, because the worst outcome in this category is a patient who spends a surgical budget on non-surgical sessions and ends up needing the surgery anyway.

What it costs

A plan before a price tag.

Pricing depends on whether the plan uses KYBELLA®, Morpheus8®, filler balancing, or referral, and how many sessions your anatomy needs. The consultation is complimentary when booked through our Houston clinic booking flow. You leave with a written plan either way.

Why ZO Houston

Plan first. Treatment second.

A ZO Skin Centre is different because the visit starts with a plan, not a menu. Your provider reviews skin behavior, tolerance, products, timing, and goals before recommending treatment. We use physician-grade ZO protocols, document the plan clearly, and tell you no when a service is not the best fit.

What causes a double chin?

Submental fullness can come from fat under the chin, anatomy, skin laxity, posture, jawline structure, or a combination. The cause determines whether KYBELLA®, Morpheus8®, filler balancing, or surgery makes more sense.

Is KYBELLA® good for a double chin?

KYBELLA® may be appropriate for selected patients with true submental fat, and results are permanent in the treated fat. It is not the best answer for every under-chin concern, especially when laxity or bone structure is the main issue.

How many KYBELLA® treatments will I need?

Many patients need two to four sessions spaced roughly six to eight weeks apart, depending on the amount of fat and the response. Your provider will give you a realistic session estimate at the assessment rather than promising one-visit results.

Can Morpheus8® help under the chin?

Morpheus8® may support mild tightening and texture under the chin for qualified patients, but it does not remove fat the way KYBELLA® or surgery can. Fat problems and skin problems need different tools, which is why the assessment comes first.

Does chin filler help a double chin?

Sometimes, and it surprises people. If a recessed chin or soft jawline is creating the shadow, chin and jawline filler can improve the profile without touching the fat at all. This is a profile-balance question, which is exactly what the consultation evaluates.

Is there downtime after KYBELLA®?

Expect visible swelling under the chin for days and sometimes a couple of weeks, along with tenderness and numbness. It is very treatable downtime, but it should be scheduled around events and photos.

When is surgery better than KYBELLA® or Morpheus8®?

Surgery may be more appropriate when there is significant laxity, anatomy that needs structural correction, or an expectation that non-surgical treatment cannot realistically meet. We say so plainly and refer when that is the honest answer.
