The treatment
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel uses an acid solution to speed turnover of the outer skin. At this clinic the peels are from ZO Skin Health. The Stimulator Peel stays at the surface. The 3-Step Peel goes deeper, with TCA and a retinol layer. Dullness, uneven tone, congestion, surface texture, and post-acne marks can change. Depth is chosen for the skin in the room, including recent sun and whether it was prepped.
How a chemical peel works
The solution is painted on clean skin and left for a set time. A Stimulator Peel visit is about 30 minutes. Heat and tingling during the pass are normal. A 3-Step Peel leaves a retinol crème on after you leave. The provider times the peel and takes the solution off when the protocol says, not when the sting peaks.
ZO home care before a 3-Step Peel
A 3-Step Peel is usually booked after weeks of ZO home care. Prepped skin sheds more evenly. A Stimulator Peel can be a first peel, with less of that runway. On deeper skin tones, a stronger peel waits until the skin is ready, so the visit does not leave new pigment.

What chemical peels treat in Houston
Active breakouts, a fresh sunburn, and melasma that has not been prepped should not start with a peel.
Photos are clinic patients, showing the concern. They are not the result.

Chemical peels for uneven tone
Sun-flushed, patchy color on the cheek can settle across a series. A single dark spot, or melasma, often needs Lumecca or home care before any peel.

Chemical peels for texture
Crepey lines around the mouth can soften as the surface turns over. Lines cut in by movement usually need a different tool.

Chemical peels for congestion
A peel can lift the buildup that keeps pores looking clogged. Blackheads that need to be extracted, with no flaking, are a HydraFacial®.

Chemical peels for post-acne marks
Once breakouts are quiet, dark marks on the cheek can fade across a series. Inflamed acne should be treated before a peel.

Treatment plan
What a chemical peel visit includes
- Skin is cleansed.
- The peel chosen for that skin is applied and timed. A stronger peel is not used because it was requested.
- It comes off on the protocol. The restart day for retinoids and acids is written down before you leave.
After the visit
When chemical peel results show in Houston
Tone and texture change across a series. A Stimulator Peel is often every 4 to 6 weeks. A 3-Step Peel is a few times a year, after prep.
- 01
Days
Chemical peel downtime
- Makeup waits until the provider clears it.
- Photos and events go before a 3-Step Peel, or several days after a Stimulator Peel.
- 02
4–6 weeks
Between chemical peels
- A Stimulator Peel is often repeated on that cadence.
- A 3-Step Peel is not a monthly visit.
- 03
Weeks
After the peel series
- Brightness from a light peel shows within a few days and builds when it is repeated.
- Tone from a 3-Step Peel keeps settling after the shed is finished.
Which peel
Stimulator Peel vs 3-Step Peel
One stays at the surface. The other is the corrective peel, and it is booked only after the skin is prepped.

A controlled depth peel is a separate physician visit, for etched lines and deeper sun damage. It is not these two peels. Controlled depth peel
The acid
TCA peel in Houston
TCA is trichloroacetic acid. The ZO 3-Step Peel uses it at 10%, with 17% salicylic acid and 5% lactic acid. A 6% retinol crème stays on after those acids come off, and a hydrating crème is the third step.
Controlled depth peelWhat this TCA changes
The blend lifts the outer skin. Tone, surface texture, sun damage, and flat post-acne marks can change. A pit you can feel is SkinPen or Morpheus8®, not this peel.
Timed, not frosted
The solution is timed and taken off on the ZO protocol. A stronger TCA, left on until the skin turns white, is a deeper injury and is not this visit.
The strength stays put
The vial is the ZO formula. A request for a stronger TCA does not change it. If the concern needs more than this blend, the next visit is a different treatment, not a higher percentage.
Pigment
Chemical peels for hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation means extra color in the skin. A peel can change the kind that sits in the outer layer and is spread across the face. Sun spots, post-acne marks, and melasma are not the same plan.
Hyperpigmentation treatmentDiffuse sun tone
When the color is spread through the outer skin, a series turns it over. Strong sun on the new skin can lay that color back down, so the peel is timed around exposure.
Post-acne marks
A flat brown mark left after a breakout can fade once breakouts are quiet. Picking, a scrub, or a peel on skin that is still inflamed starts a new mark.
Acne treatmentMelasma
A symmetric patch that darkens with heat is melasma. A peel that is too strong can make it darker. Home care comes first, and this peel waits until that prep is underway.
One sun spot
A discrete, stable spot is often Lumecca. The light darkens that spot, and it flakes off over the next week or two. A peel is the visit when the color is spread out, or when texture is on the same plan.

Who performs chemical peels at ZO Skin Centre Houston?
Krista Wheeler, Licensed Master Aesthetician & Certified Professional Laser Technician. Herminia Garcia, Registered Nurse and aesthetic injector. Dr. Mark Khorsandi is the medical director.
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel uses an acid to speed turnover of the outer skin. This clinic uses the ZO Stimulator Peel, which stays at the surface, and the ZO 3-Step Peel, which goes deeper with TCA and a retinol layer. Dullness, tone, congestion, texture, and post-acne marks can change.
What is a TCA peel?
TCA is trichloroacetic acid. At this clinic it is the 10% TCA in the ZO 3-Step Peel, with 17% salicylic acid and 5% lactic acid, then a 6% retinol crème left on the skin. A stronger TCA painted on until the skin frosts is not this peel. A controlled depth peel is a separate physician visit.
Does a chemical peel hurt?
A Stimulator Peel feels warm or tingly for a few minutes. A 3-Step Peel feels hotter, then like a sunburn for a day or two. The provider says what the pass will feel like before it starts.
Will I peel?
A Stimulator Peel usually does not leave flakes. Skin can feel tight for a day. A 3-Step Peel is red for a day or two, then flakes for about 2 to 4 days.
Which chemical peel should I book?
Book a Stimulator Peel for dullness or mild congestion when you cannot take downtime. Book a 3-Step Peel for tone, texture, or post-acne marks when the skin has been prepped and you can take several days after the visit.
Do I need to prep my skin?
A Stimulator Peel usually needs little prep. A 3-Step Peel is usually booked after weeks of ZO home care, so the skin sheds evenly.
Can a chemical peel worsen pigment?
Any peel can leave new pigment if the skin is sunburned, not prepped, or the peel is too strong. Pigment history and recent sun are reviewed before a peel is booked.
Can a chemical peel help hyperpigmentation?
It can, when the color sits in the outer skin and is spread across the face. Flat brown marks can fade once breakouts are quiet. A single stable sun spot is often Lumecca. A melasma patch can darken if the peel is too strong, so that plan starts with home care.
Can peels help acne-prone skin?
Peels can be part of an acne plan once breakouts are quiet, for congestion and the marks they leave. Inflamed acne is treated first.
How much downtime should I expect?
A Stimulator Peel is usually back to normal the same day, with tightness for about a day. A 3-Step Peel needs several days: red at first, then flaking. Event timing is set before the peel is booked.
How many chemical peels will I need?
A Stimulator Peel is often every 4 to 6 weeks. A 3-Step Peel is a few times a year, after prep. The consultation sets the count before anything is booked.
When will I see chemical peel results?
A Stimulator Peel looks brighter within a few days. A 3-Step Peel looks worse during the shed, then tone and texture keep settling for weeks after.
How much does a chemical peel cost in Houston?
Mild chemical peels, including the ZO Stimulator Peel, start at $99. The ZO 3-Step Peel is $400. A series is quoted at the consultation, before anything is booked.
Is the 3-Step Peel worth it?
When the concern is tone, texture, or marks a light peel has not changed, the 3-Step Peel is the one that sheds. For dullness before an event, the Stimulator Peel is enough. The consultation makes that call.
