The treatment
What is microneedling?
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a sterile pen with fine needles to make controlled channels in the skin. The device is SkinPen, with a single-use cartridge. Those channels are the treatment: a controlled signal for a repair response that supports collagen. Across the weeks that follow, that response can change the look of texture, pores, shallow acne scars, and early fine lines.
How microneedling works
The needles are fine, and the depth is set to the area and to what the skin can tolerate that day. The channels are small. The day-of look is redness, not an open wound. The skin reads them as a signal to repair, and that response supports new collagen and elastin over the following weeks. A serum can be placed in the same channels, so it sits in the skin rather than on top of it.
Microneedling with PRP
PRP is platelet-rich plasma from a small blood draw, concentrated and applied into the fresh channels. The platelets come from that blood draw. It is added for shallow scars or thinning, crepey skin, when the channels alone are not the whole plan. Sculptra® can go into the channels the same way when skin quality is part of the concern. Some people call the PRP version a vampire facial, because of the blood draw. The provider says whether either add-on belongs on the plan.
